VONY’s ARTISTSPOTLIGHT Feature, My M.O. is a band with explosive rhythms and catchy sounds that leave you wanting to hear more. VONY would like you to get to know them just like we do and soon everyone will too at our special APTsessions coming soon this summer. Erika is a stylish southeast Asian EmCee and singer from Australia, that handles lead vocals and bass. Katy is a red-haired eclectic DJ from Texas who plays keys and does production and vocals. Dion is a Jamaican born rocker, that shreds guitar and sings back-up vocals. This band has hit NYC by storm! They are quickly booking shows through out the indie music scene, playing locally in Brooklyn and Manhattan. My M.O. has created a friendly buzz, keeping audiences intrigued for more! Want to know more? Take a look at our interview with them...

Interview with My M.O.

*VONY: Can you identify your band members and explain, how did you three meet, and how long have you been working together?*

Katy Walker, keys vocals, production
Erika Buestami, lead vocals, bass
Dion Mckenzie vocals, guitar

KW: I met Dion thru a friend a few years back and we began writing What I Want and also other songs that I had previously written with some other song writers. My DJ partner introduced me to Erika bc I was looking for an engineer to mix the trax and turns out she was a vocalist and an all around awesome person. Erika moved into Dion's neighborhood and the rest is history.

DM: Yea, I was introduced to Erika through Katy, which was quite the experience. Didn't know what to make of her at first. She was quite peculiar, did a whole bunch of impersonations which were outright hysterical! I'm a bit more quiet and reserved when I meet people for the first time, so I was just observing her and I was intrigued and I wanted to know more. Erika has that magical effect.

*VONY: What's it like working with each other and how does your diverse background affect it?*

KW: We have a great synergy and an intensity that makes it exciting for the band's live show to get tight so the music gets out to the world. Its a very passionate collaboration and crazy fun to work together. For example, I've always had a fascination with Jamaica and the music from there so Dion being Jamaican, her life story and how both her and Erika got here from other countries, I came from Austin to New York City for music, we met miraculously, it is totally inspiring to me and truly meant to be.

DM: Aww, thanks Katy.

*VONY: "Modus operandi" or "Method of Operation" means a person's way of doing things or their style. What is your M.O. and why was it chosen as the band's name?*

KW: Well music is our mo, guess that’s kind of our tagline. It was chosen because music is the platform for expression. When I came up with the name, I was thinking even though music doesn't make money and the industry has changed so dramatically it is an incredibly influential part of our world and a major platform for all that I do business wise too. I-phone apps, websites, films, whatever, its a spring board. Here's a great quote from an 19th century author who was a woman that wrote under a mans name.

“I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs, and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music.” –George Elliot

*VONY: You guys have a define style. Does anybody help you with your fashion looks?*

KW: Dion and Erika have an incredibly unique sense of style and aesthetic, we actually all have a similar sense of aesthetic and fairly different style though I think since Dion and I are both athletes we have this kind of sporty hip look and Erika is more exotic and pulls from a bunch of different cultures for her style choices. Yes we do have someone who has helped with our style, he has helped me try to wear things that are a bit more sexy and flattering to my figure etc because I tend to get wrapped up in the music and forget about the presentation.

*VONY: Your lyrics are quite catchy who writes the songs and what are the common themes of your songs?*

KW: We all contribute to different things on the songs. Bonfire we all worked together on the lyrics. I do all the beats and work with another producer sometimes on the tracks. The actual music are chord progressions I dream up and that Dion and i work together on. Now we come up with stuff live as a band and I'm looking forward to recording them into Logic and working with everyone on them. The themes are really hard to pin down, but its just about being an independent woman, the ups and downs of the soul mate search, breaking the mold and also having a good time.

*VONY: What do you want people to take away, when they listen to your music?*

KW: We are heartfelt artists that use music as a platform to move you, both physically and emotionally. Its not about how great we are and how we look and all that shit, its about making music that makes you think and feel sexy or sad or even motivated to create your place in the world. We love life, self-expression, and making music so we hope we inspire our fans to do the same.

*VONY: What's your advice to any youth thinking of pursuing music?*

KW: Music is self expression, you can find yourself in your art form so pursue it with all your heart but don't covet it, its a journey. But remember it takes time and patience. Study theory and understand how you can write music but that does not mean you have to stick with the mainstream format. The tighter you are technically but at the same time the more original your ideas, the more influential your music will be. Also music is a platform to do other things, master it first and it will open so many doors for you.

*VONY: I saw on your MySpace page that Prince and Micheal Jackson were some of your influences, how much of their style has influenced your music. What's your favorite song by either one?*

KW: Prince "I would die for you" and "Controversy" is one of my favorites. I love the fact that he was so heartfelt and such a great musician but wrote pop music. He messed with your head, the lyrics: is he gay or is he straight? is he black or is he white? He forced people to deal with uncomfortable subject matters like mixing races and even bisexuality while making hit records. He's a huge influence for me, how he crossed over pop into black music, and rock with crazy synths and beats, he just made totally classic, timeless music.

*VONY: A lot of people are concerned with what the Disney channel is portraying to our youth. Last month Miley Cyrus performed on dancing with the stars and it caused alot of controversy. She has been accused of wearing cleavage-baring corsets, grinding with dancers, pretending to make-out on stage, and she was even been busted for dirty dancing with her "The Last Song" director Adam Shankman. Do you think the press is attacking Miley Cyrus or should she really tone down her act?*

KW: Yes I think sex is something to be played with subtly. I also think she is a pop star that does not write her songs and is not a true artist so she is part of this totally different type of machine. Prince messed with sex a lot, but it was part of his persona, it worked for him. It doesn't work for her, a lot of artists try things that don't work for their careers and then they suffer the consequences. I think a lot about how much sex we put in the music, but we are also writing sophisticated songs for adults not for teeny boppers so we have a license to do whatever we want. But we are also women and we can only use our sexuality so much before people stop taking us seriously. Its a fine line.

*VONY: How far along are you guys in the process of making your debut album?*

KW: Its pretty much done but we are focusing on the EP first and will try to wrap all the small details on the songs by September. I want to release it in October so the momentum keeps up but some people say we should wait until January of next year. We'll see what happens.

*VONY: What can people expect to come from My M.O. in the near future?*

KW: A really great live show, hopefully tours outside the US. We are hoping to do a nice show for SXSW in Austin, my home town. The music videos are definitely working out for us, we have a very talented network of people collaborating with us. Bonfire is looking out to be the title track to the debut album now, so look out for a crazy music video for that.

*VONY: Art is ...(Complete the sentence)*

KW: Art is life. Classes are intended to be fun and to encourage positive attitudes, team building and self-expression.

A view of a workshop is shown below:

"The Empire State Building of the Future"

This short documentary of a KDIC workshop chronicles a group of young students participating in a program that gave them the task of re-imagining the iconic Empire State building. The film follows the young artists as they visit the structure for inspiration, are guided in a visualization process, and mentored by professional artists to finally bring their creation to life. In creating their own versions of the building, they incorporated information they learned about environmental design, but most importantly, they included elements of themselves in a revealing way. The kids finally present their work on the final day, closing the chapter- but not the book, on a very fun and unique artistic experience. Interviews with the children, mentors, and parents provide the unique perspectives of each of those involved and affected by the program. It enabled the exploration of the capabilities of the kids' imagination and showed how they applied it to the task while staying interactive and having fun.

This workshop, keeping up with KDIC's goal of creative expression, offers but a glimpse of the kinds of project, kids will undertake in this program and the effects it can bring to their thinking and work.Ms. Susy-O' Herselfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751575655731808956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1560362972903461746.post-58316719764884282242010-04-20T12:09:00.000-07:002010-04-30T20:01:44.571-07:00VONY still moving, Thanks to ALLPeace and greetings to all VONY members and supporters,

I am happy to say that VONY is going strong and growing everyday. We had some of the most inspirational poets perform for the cause of raising money for the 1st Annual Youth Media/Arts Conference this June 27th. We were able to make close to our goal and most of all we had a world premier screening of the Voices of New York Speak PSA (public service announcement) for our guests.

Our guests had a great time and enjoyed the spoken word of Marxman, Helen D. Lewis, Oveous Maximus, Kesed, from the HBO series Brave New Voices Joshua Bennet and Queen GodIs, and last but not least Def Poetry Jams very own Black Ice. These poets brought their own unique style and graced the stage with lyrics that moved, inspired, and gave us a good laugh.

Thanks to everyone who supported and contributed to making this Conference a reality for parents, educators and teaching artists to attend and discuss youth media and the education system and learn key tools that will assist with bringing our youth an updated school curriculum integrated with multimedia resources and creative arts programs.

Photos courtesy of M.Johnson

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; So far it's been very challenging doing the fast during the winter time. The couple times I did the fast it was warmer weather, however I must say I am face to face with my will. I can honestly say I almost gave up the fast for a warm bowl of oatmeal until I realized I was faced with the decision to give up on my health. This fast has been very enlightening in the respect that I have been able to notice all my weaknesses and release them for strength. I have been eating lots of different salads mixing fruits, veggies, and nuts. I made some dishes that came out okay. I took avocado, tomato, garlic, lemon juice and mixed in chopper in to a dip which I used for broccoli florets and string beans to dip in. This actually was good, it made a great snack . I took carrots, garlic, lemon juice that I put in a chopper and stuffed into avocado halves, I drizzled raw apple cider vinegar and flax seed over top. This also was good, the carrots offered sweetness, and the garlic gave a spicy kick. I also made a chopped spinach salad, with avocado, sun dried tomato, cut up tomato, chopped cashews, tossed in pesto sauce. Now this was very flavorful. I am doing research everyday, learning the ins and outs of this diet. There are people that live on a raw diet everyday, who have given up the whole idea of cooking food practically dead for the benefits of live foods. There are restaurants, cook books, sites dedicated to Cooking live foods. The list of what one can eat and flavor with is quite extensive, though it takes a lot of creativity and trials before you can really enjoying cooking live foods. I have kept things for the most part pretty basic, I'm sure the more times I do this fast I will consider trying newer things. My intake of greens and fruits has been high and I realized how easy it is to eat junk rather than making a fruit salad or snacking on nuts or veggies. My son isn't on the fast with us 100%, he is fasting though from meat, sugar, dairy, processes foods, etc, he is enjoying high intake of beans, lentils, veggies, fish, fruit. For snacks instead of crackers or yogurt he has been eating carrots, grapes, nuts, he loves when I make raw apple sauce. I can so far say it's going well, there is 9 days of the fast left, and then we have to ween back grains, fish, ect. thanks for stopping by. WELCOME 2009I would like to welcome this new year with peace, prosperity and good health for all things sound and unseen throughout the universe and beyond. This year I wish to take a stand in the right direction by listening more to my intuition, mind, body and spirit. Right now it is guiding me to release unwanted energy, waste, and gain powerful will, clarity, and direction. The direction for me is a better out look, healthy self, and positive flow.

Through various trials, I found, I am most balanced when I am eating only fish as my meat, and eliminating red meats and poultry. It's many benefits suit my particular body's necessities. However, those of you that know me, understand I am a mother and had to go through pregnancy. During my pregnancy in my 3rd month, I had the sudden undying urge to bite in to a big mac, after not have eaten fast food or red meat for 5 years. Now, that was a big decision, because I grew up loving to tear up some well seasoned steak, but I also, was so convinced to stop eating beef after all the research I allowed my self to find. But nothing at that point, could stop me from creating an argument to get my big mac and, sink my teeth in the thousand islandy sweetness that makes my beef o.k. to eat. Since then, I have been eating beef not particularly big macs. And, you know what? My son is now 2 years old. So, to lift the energy of beef from my path, I decided it was time to go on my fast. It takes 2 weeks only. I love it and I got my husband into it when we were dating. It allows one to reach their center and feel the balance with in and applying discipline where needed. For me, slowing things down to a primal state of thinking in my eating habits gives me the source to do that with my personal instincts. Connecting me to a deeper level of my self through meditations and consciousness.

The grounds where your feet touch can let you bend down to pick out carrots for your enjoyment and grow a tree with fruits and nuts to munch on. Without any sense of it's use we bit into it. Our natural senses are very attracted to raw eating. We just don't know it. So this month I'm taking my way in to a pure, conscious, natural, primal way of eating with a modern twist. The modern twist is the use of appliances to cook with. Like the blender, juicer, chopper, etc. Stay glued through my 2 week journey going raw. Sharing tips, ideas, and recipes. And oh yeah! My son is joining us, he needs this too. Since 6 months ago, when he was introduced to candy and ice cream, it has been a challenge. So it's time to show him how to release all that build up, caused from processed sugars and too much dairy. And retrain our palates to enjoy natures goodies. I do this fast to get centered or help me clear out the bad eating I have exposed my body to. They say you feel as good as you eat. So I want to feel the best, why not eat natures best. Raw!
Ms. Susy-O' Herselfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751575655731808956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1560362972903461746.post-81758589291628790252008-10-11T23:44:00.000-07:002009-05-04T02:23:06.248-07:00Listen to your heart
I loved being somewhere new and different so much, I stayed for another month longer. It's hard to make time for loved ones, especially if we let the worlds societal influences effect us, I chose to listen to my heart and made changes that made me feel love and give love. We are born with the right to travel and move upon this earth with free spirit. What I question is why have we been robbed of the right to just get up and move? Leaving harsh or unfullfilling environments for better. From the time of early man, humans have been navigating this earth to find blessings and opportunities to empower their survival skills for stability and protection. Today we need to be picked in a lottery to leave our own countries, or have to sneak out(illegally) of our country. All this for what? To seek better resources, and opportunites for families, communities, tribes etc. We are placed in chains, physically, mentally and most of spiritually. To not have the option to just get up and move is denying your spiritual quest. Life is experiences. Sometimes, just leaving your environment temporarily can have a major impact in your growth, because the journey you took brought upon many experiences which is also a wealth of the earth. People need to get away and move out of their comfort zone to experience something different. We need a chance to put our survival skills to work, channeling through our potential, talents and gifts. Travel can also offer healing and insight, so take time to travel anywhere your soul reveals and embrace the growth. I am myself leaving on the 27th out the country for 2 months. Will share all my new discoveries. I wanna be the alchemist. In seek of my dreams.Ms. Susy-O' Herselfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751575655731808956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1560362972903461746.post-4510379194686194432008-04-23T21:21:00.001-07:002009-05-19T00:20:23.991-07:00WELCOME TO MY WORLDEveryday I sit and watch people walk and go by with out understanding the purpose of our children, our women, our fathers. Walking by and subjecting themselves to pure, blissful ignorance. What can we do to show the world our importance to the universe. Well this site is a start. I will share what I know, because the worst thing I can do is not share the knowledge presented to me through intentful self searching. Connecting myself with the one of the universe is all I need in order to understand myself and my purpose and I seek to associate my self with people on the same path to higherself consciousness. A family, a spiritual tribe of the aquarian age, a community of like minds is what I am apart of. Desiring the compassion and unconditional support of other people. The way god intended it to be. I believe people do make the world go round and there is no shame in accepting that no matter what we know, no matter what we accomplish we will be just dwelling creatures on earth and this great force is our source to anything our hearts desire. I submit to the good of the universe and want to share the good I have gotten to know with the rest of the world, especially with my sisters, my children, and my bothers. Together we can build a solid loving future and know that we did our part to set the minds and hearts of our people back to the sun.Ms. Susy-O' Herselfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07751575655731808956noreply@blogger.com1
